Langkawi Island

Langkawi was a really nice Island and Rainbow Lodge turned out to be a really nice place to stay, so we decided to stay there until the British Embassy called us to let us know that my passport was ready for collection (which turned out to be 16 nights). The ferry port  at Kuah Town is quite a bustling town with many duty free shops and large hotels. There is a large marina with yachts and large boats. In fact, Colin had this notion that we could buy a small yacht and sail round the world. When I reminded him that none of us can sail his answer was 'it can't be that hard, we can learn on the internet and if we get into any trouble, we just get into the lifeboat and row away'! The worrying thing is...I think he was serious. Luckily one of us has some sense so the idea of buying a yacht was binned.
Pantai Chenang Beach, where we stayed, was about 20 minutes by scooter from Kuah Town, although it did take a lot longer in the taxi on the night we arrived as the driver got lost! It was a busy wee place with 5-star accommodation, backpackers budget accommodation, eateries and shops. Also it had 3 duty free shops, which was great when you wanted to buy a beer. A lot of the food on the beach front wasn't that great and could be a bit pricey, but we did find some local places where the food was good and cheap. Although there was a night market once a week where you could buy food from the hawker stalls and take it back to your accommodation to enjoy.
The beach was a typical busy beach with lots of sunbeds, restaurants and watersports - not like our wee tranquil beach in Agonda. In fact, all the time we were there we only went to the beach once and that was only to see what it was like. We had a soft drink in a cafe and then left, but we did get some Langkawi sand in our toes. Probably not a bad thing as the sun in Langkawi is really fierce until about 6.30 in the evening. It was great to get the odd downpour of rain.
There is no public transport system on the Island, only taxis, so several days we hired a scooter and went off exploring. Once you leave Pantai Chenang, Langkawi is a beautiful Island. You drive through villages and it is very green and lush. These villages are were we found really good restaurants that catered for lacals rather than tourists selling really good cheap food.
The beaches on the North of the Island are very beautiful and almost deserted. Most of the beaches are taken up by 5-star resorts, but they are normally sectioned off with some of the beach left for the poor people like us to enjoy. There was plenty to explore and we enjoyed hiring the scooter to do this.
